Repeating the Body

Unlike the original preliminary course exercises at the Bauhaus, the materials we use in this workshop are not metal, fabric or paper, but rather our bodies. Johannes Itten started his preliminary course with breathing and rhythmic exercises – and that’s how this workshop begins as well. We investigate the relationship between the body’s form and function and how movement and form can be created with only a minimal amount of energy. And like the preliminary course, we ask: How can we attain efficiency and clarity through practice? How does repetition encourage creativity? No prior dance experience is required to participate.

Jo Parkes is a dance and video artist. She has initiated and headed participative dance projects for over 17 years. She is the founder of the group Mobile Dance e.V. and was honoured for her outstanding artistic achievements in social and participative dance projects at the German Dance Award gala in 2019.

Practical tip: Please wear comfortable clothing. Participants can dance either barefoot or in socks. Workshop language: English / German
