Image analysis and interpretation was an established component of the lessons given by Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Albers. The purpose of the exercise was to enable students to “experience” pictures through artistic abstraction, to feel them and heighten perception. In our workshop we ask: What role did images play 100 years ago, and what role do they play today? Is translating pictorial elements into language, or converting language into images still relevant? After a short introduction for inspiration, the participants will have the opportunity to practically develop and jointly discuss their own approaches to images. Using a sketch pad, pencils, camera and computer, we will develop our own methods of seeing images in a new way.

Ulrich Schwarz is a professor of “Fundamentals of Design” in the degree programme “Visual Communication” at the Berlin University of the Arts. With his agency Bertron Schwarz Frey, he develops permanent and temporary exhibitions for European museums.
