Joost Schmidt, Poster for the Bauhaus Exhibition in Weimar, 1923

Joost Schmidt designed the poster for the first exhibition of the Bauhaus’s work in 1923. It already shows characteristic features of the New Typography: diagonally arranged bars and circular shapes are combined with text in various typefaces. At the top left, the round Bauhaus logo by Oskar Schlemmer forms the ‘head’ of the geometric figure. The word ‘Bauhaus’ above it immediately catches the eye, and like the words ‘Ausstellung’ [‘Exhibition’] and ‘Weimar’ contrasts strongly against the light background. It is an example of the ‘clear communication in its most powerful form’ that László Moholy-Nagy advocated.
